I made a blog!

So, since I'm living in India for the next 3+ months I thought it might be easier to keep people updated on my adventures (or potential lack of adventures) if I kept a blog...

For those who have stumbled across this by accident, I am sorry :P However I shall attempt to introduce myself:

My name is Sherrie and I am currently completing my final semester of a Bachelor of Social Work through the University of Queensland. As my final semester is basically just placement, I applied for a New Colombo Plan grant from the Australian government, to complete the placement overseas. Thus I am now in Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka settling in before my placement officially starts on the 16th of July. After months of indecision and questioning my sanity about my decision to go to India I arrived on Wednesday after a slight adventure and here I shall stay until towards the end of October. Although I am currently in Bengaluru staying at a guest house, at the end of next week I will be adventuring out into the great unknown, aka to neighbouring state Andhra Pradesh to the site of the NGO I will be completing the placement with (The Timbaktu Collective - http://www.timbaktu.org/).

I will attempt a more detailed post within the next few days but for now, top impressions about India:
  • Food = great
  • Traffic = terrifying
  • People = very friendly
  • Me = tourist attraction

An update in circumstances

Hey all, I figure it is time to actually update you on the past month, something that I guess I have been avoiding a little. So, I'm actually back in Australia, spending my time between Brisbane and Warwick. I will explain... Halfway through my third week on placement I received news that my grandfather was in hospital with pneumonia and so at the end of my third week I left Timbaktu, returned to Bangalore for 24 hours and then flew back to Brisbane. At the time I left I was unsure if I was coming home for a few weeks or if I was coming home permanently but over the past few weeks I have made the decision to withdraw from my placement at Timbaktu and remain in Australia to spend more time with my family and help out my parents and grandparents. It was not an easy decision to make and the result of it is that I am now deferring placement (and graduation) until next semester where I will do the placement locally. Timbaktu

Aaaaaand now an introduction to Timbaktu! http://www.timbaktu.org/ TA DAAAA! I'm done now! Joking. I have completed my first full week at Timbaktu and my second week on placement. I am not entirely sure what I have learned but it has been an experience. Before I continue I would like to apologise for the lack of photos. I went through last night and selected a few photos from the last few days in Bangalore and from SEDS and then realised I had selected about 80 photos and they were uploading at about one every 5 minutes so yeah... I am not sure what the data limit is on the internet router I'm "borrowing" and have decided you can wait for more extensive photos when I visit Bangalore sometime in August. I will try to be more constant with posting photos on Instagram and Facebook but we shall see what happens. Anyway, Timbaktu! The remaining adventures in Bengaluru

So, I realise I start a lot of sentences with “so” and probably should train myself out of that habit. My bad… I feel like my posts are all over the place. I have updated you all on my whereabouts (which is Timbaktu not Timbuktu, and yes both are real places), and posted about my happy place in Bengaluru. I think I’m missing information from Sunday until Saturday when I wrote the update about Timbaktu but to make things easier for me I’ll do one about the remaining time in Bengaluru and then make another one about the adventures since leaving. Placement officially started on the 16th but we had a few unofficial chats with Augustine on Saturday and Sunday, which continued into the week. Most days we’d spend the morning listening to Augustine explain Indian political history, Ghandi, the caste system, the emergence of community development and many other things.
